Last night, the transmission on my 2002 Ford Taurus went out while I was driving. Car only has 110,000 miles on it. The transmission will not pick up any gears, it only whines as the engine is revved, no matter which gear it‘s in. Could it be that some type of sensor went out, or is it more likely that something broke inside the transmission. I have had no previous problems or indications that it would quit. It was just all of a sudden. Like I said, I can hear a whining noise coming out of the transmission. Thanks.
Likely it is a goner. But it could be as simple as a torque converter. Your Taurus probably has the 4.0l engine and if it does and you were good about maintenance, it's got plenty of life in it. Have a tranny shop look at the transmission and consider the expense of a rebuild, $1200 more or less, and the cost of replacing the car.
it might be full of fluid, but the filter could be clogged up and the pump cant pick up the fluid. change the fluid and filter and see if that helps.
it sounds like the front pump went out. the input shaft to the pump may have broken half. the transmission needs to be rebuilt if this happened. the reason for the rebuild and not just replacing the parts that are broken is because there are little tiny metal flakes that are in the fluid through out the trans. also the forward clutch drum may be cracked causing fluid to leak out and not pressurize the system properly. if this has been cracked for a while then the clutch frictions and steels are probably ruined and need replaced anyway. take to a transmission repair shop and have them overhaul the transmssion.
