Question:

transmission leak?

I own a 95 ford contour and my transmission fluid is leaking through the breather. What can I do to fix this problem. It also idles really low when I‘m in drive and sometimes stalls can anyone tell me what is going on. I had a sensor replaced but it sounds like it didn‘t help the problem. Please help!!!

Answer:

Is this an automatic transmission? If so does it have a dipstick? (Idon't know what a ford contour is) But if it is an auto box go and drive it for about 10 miles, get home and park some where flat, leave the engine running and put the selector in each of the positions i.e. park, drive, reverse etc and then back into the park position. Then with engine still running check the dipstick and look very carefully coz it's not like checking engine oil! Any wet up the dipstick is where the level is at, it's not an obvious blob of oil like on the engine dipstick. It probably is over full.
The fluid will only leak through the breather if it is way overfull or the transmission is overheating and the fluid is boiling and coming out the vent, usually from the transmission slipping. The help you need can come from a certified auto technician diagnosing your vehicle. Guessing will not fix the problem.
