Question:

Transmission shifting into neutral randomly?

I have a 2003 dodge stratus and today when driving it it randomly shifted into neutral, it‘s an automatic. It did it twice and I had to pull over to restart the car to get it to go back to drive. The lever itself does not move and it doesn‘t say that I‘m in neutral on the dash. Something else that happened is I was trying to back out of the parking spot I was in and it went back a little but then stopped, again I had to restart the car. Any idea what could be the reason for this? I checked my transmission fluid and I have more than enough, is it possible that having too much transmission fluid could cause it?

Answer:

Electronic transmission control. There are safety solenoids in the transmission that won't allow it to backflow when in drive or go in reverse. The controls are out of wack, but the design has by my count, possibly saved your life twice by letting you coast over instead of locking up or going into reverse at 55 mph!
flat iron is better for me
Too much ATF will cause the fluid to foam which can cause problems. No idea how many miles on your vehicle? It's kind of hard to diagnose things with no idea what you've done for maintenance or the mileage. It didn't go into neutral.the clutch packs in the transmission are slipping. If this has been happening for a while you will be needing $1800 worth of repairs to rebuild the transmission soon.
