Question:

Transmission trouble?

I discovered much to my chagrin this morning that my 96 Dodge caravan is leaking a purple-pinkish fluid! It‘s been very very cold in my area (last night dropped down to -15F), and I was wondering if a transmission could possibly crack in such a temperature? It‘s streaming out the fluid the last I checked, so is there anything I can do or is this to go to the mechanic? Would anyone know a ballpark estimate on how much this would cost? Thanks for your time!

Answer:

Turn your engine on; set in P and watch on the right side of the engine compartment. Yo'll be able to 'see' if it squirts out of a hose (there are a set of hoses in the front side, low by the radiator, which actually are the cooling side of the transmission fluid so it regains it proper temp). If there is a leak on a hose, you will probably be able to see it in there. It could be just loose. In any regard, I think it needs to be taken to a shop. It is all due to the temp we all have been experiencing, for sure.
a hose probably split from age and the cold exacerbated the problem. it needs to go to a shop.
Purple-pinkish? The fluid for your transmission should be red. Remove your transmission dip stick and compare the colors. I can't think of any fluids that might be the color you describe except maybe windshield washer fluid. Do you suppose the washer fluid reservoir might have cracked in the cold? By the way your transmission is an A604 (also called 41TE) and should use ATF+3 or 4 fluid only. (It's red) Are you having any symptoms of transmission problems? .Good Luck.
