Question:

Transmission troubleshooting?

I have an 88 olds 89 Royal, 440t4 Trans and my car will not go into gear, It still goes into park and neutral but nothing else. When I shift I can hear it bog down, I was wondering what might be wrong with it. The night it broke I heard a snap. Could it be a broken drive chain? I know its not the driveaxle so it must be a busted thing in the transmission.

Answer:

a 88 Olds 98 I presume. Sounds like main drive shaft broke or possible differential gears. Sounds like transmission time. I presume frt. wheel drive, trans. diff. all in same assembly. Estimate $1200.00 to $1500.00 to replace with rebuilt unit.
It sounds like you lost pressure in the transmission. This can happen when the pump fails but generally it won't bog down when you put it into a gear. It could be the torque converter. If you put a pressure gauge (or have someone else do it) on one of the test ports on the transmission and you have pressure it is probably the torque converter. Good luck.
sounds like the pump is having a no longer ordinary time picking up the fluid. that is precious to to drop the pan and alter the fluid and filter out. if that don,t help then you certainly probable have a vulnerable pump.
