I will have some carpeting left over from a whole house install, and would like to use some for a area rug in my dining room. What can I do to the bottom to cover the scratchy texture of the carpeting so it doesn't scratch my wood floors?
Get a giant piece of some kinda sticky, but also hasa soft side, paper from a craft store FIERCE_09
They make a anti skid mat specifically for this it also keeps the carpet in place.
You can get some rubber, like they use on the bottom of real rugs, and use some super strong glue and glue the rubber to the bottom of the excess carpet. It's cheap and easy.
I'd go buy two things......plastic sheeting, and then some durable, but soft fabric from a fabric shop. Attach these two to the underside of the carpet....voila`....I'd say that should work. The plastic sheeting will help keep the under-fabric from wearing out too quickly and if any liquids were to spill on it the liquid would be confided to that rug and not the floor underneath. The fabric is obviously to protect the floor.
You ll need to measure and cut al the carpet to the sizes you want. Take to almost any quality flooring store and they have access to having the rugs bound or surged in threading color of your choice.. Most places can give you an option of having a special backing put on at this time or you can purchase a special anti skid matting that will allow your wood to breathe and not stain the hard wood. This is a special type mat and not to be confused with the kind thats for carpet over carpet or the kind for over any hard surface. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar.. GL
