Question:

Universal vs Specific Cold Air Intake?

I‘m driving a 2003 Explorer Sport Trac. I‘m looking into making it a little faster, and I was planning on buying a KN, specific model for my truck, but I just recently heard about the universal ones that are much cheaper, and supposedly work just as well. Do they really work just as well? I‘m looking for torque and horsepower, but specifically I want that v6 to sound a little nicer and have better gas mileage. Thank you.

Answer:

In my opinion, the best buy for the buck would be keeping the stock air cleaner assembly, but install a KN air filter (they make them for stock air boxes too), if you really think you need one. Spend the money you save from that cold air intake and invest it in a good catalytic converter on back low pressure exhuast system. That also helps horse power and torque and you'll have that sound with you all the time. But, don't expect much more than 10 extra horse power either way you go,
Cold Air Intake is a device to allow cold air into the engine. It works when the air is from a source much colder than within the engine bay Ram Air Intake id a device to allow air into the engine when the vehicle moves forward. It works when the vehicel is moving forward If the ambient air temperature is at least 5 degrees Celcius below that in the engine bay, you may feel the enhanced performance (do not bother with this if often drive in the afternoon) If you drive above the designed road speed according to the RAI you installed, the improved performance may be felt (don not bother with this if often caught in traffic jams)
