Question:

Updates on Biodegradable Plastics?

I'm from Manila, and I'm putting an effort to promote biodegradable plastic through legislation. So far, only major business establishments use biodegradable plastic bags. My concern is focused on ordinary plastic bags, especially those are good for one-time use only. I read from another website the comment that disposing biodegrabale plastic bags the usual way - without composting methods - would bring worse results. In view of the above, I wish to submit these questions:1. How close are we in creating the perfect biodegradable plastic in terms of research and development? Do we now have such a cure-all, do-all and end-all item in sight?2. Would biodegradable plastic item cover tumblers, single-serve plates and utensils, and coffee stirrers? Even garbage bags? These, combined with ordinary plastic bags, are found in our trash cans and bags, at least in Manila where exposed garbage mounds reveal a vast majority of plastics. Thank you for your reply.

Answer:

Bio degradable plastic bags are an issue. In the UK, Tesco, one of our supermarkets, uses these bags but they are rubbish. Often my grocery ends up on the floor because the bags burst. Most shoppers overcome this by double bagging which defeats the point of the exercises. I try to re use plastic bags when possible but all the bio degradable ones do is turn to dust, is this dust toxic?
