Question:

Using 250v rocker switch on 125v machine?

I'm trying to replace a simple DPST rocker switch on my carpet cleaning machine and the machine is rated 125v, I found in my junk drawer a rocker switch that will work but it's rated at 16a 250v, it doesn't say anything on the switch about being able to handle 125v.so can i use this 250v rated switch on a 125v machine, or will it blow up?

Answer:

Those single pole toggles in your wall that control your lights in your house have 120 volts flowing through them, yet they are rated for 277 volts Point is, voltage rating on devices is maximum voltage handling, and mostly it relates to arcing potentialThe higher the voltage, the father it can jump through the air between two electrodesInside of the switch you have metal contacts with a small space between and a bridge, and they are spaced so that there will be no arcing at 250 volts or lowerIf you were to apply 277 through a 250 volt switch the arcing would melt the switch and possibly cause a fire Amperage limitations are about the metal thickness within the switchHigher amps require thicker metal or heat dissipation will exceed the limitations of surrounding insulators.
could possibly be the floor is leaking from a spill up there or pipes in the wall are leaking
If you have an air handler in your attic (the part of the air conditioning that blows cold air through your house) the condensate drain could be clogged, causing the pan to overflow into the atticIf not, I would say there must be some plumbing up there that has sprung a leak
