Question:

Using electrical tape to ground wire in car?

I need to ground a wire to metal in my car. I just want to be sure that i can use electrical tape to hold the wire in place on the metal. I was told this would work but better be safe than sorry. Thanks in advance

Answer:

No, it wont work. You need the bare wire conneted to the metal. The metal needs to be bare as well, no paint on it. At the very least you need to strip an inch or two of the wire, loosen up a screw that goes into metal floor, steering column, etc and wrap wire around screw and tighten screw back up with wire under it. Or do it the correct way of crimping or soldering on a ring term and putting ring under a screw
I've never known anyone to do it like that but if the tape will hold the wire in place it will work. But I would do it the professional way and screw it down.
Not only would it not work, it's ridiculous that anybody suggested such a thing. Install a ring terminal on the wire and screw it to a solid metal area. .
Electrical tape is a joke for the most part. It'll get you by in a pinch, but as a long term solution not a chance. Go get a small pack of tek screws and secure the wire to the metal that way.
I just want to be sure that i can use electrical tape to hold the wire in place on the metal.you need to crimp a ring on the end of the wire. Soldering the connection and using heat shrink wouldn't be a bad idea either. Then find a bolt or nut that provides a good ground and attach there. Sloppy wiring will just provide you with many future headaches. Better to do it correctly the first time.
