Question:

Volkswagen jetta transmission is dying?

For about 2-3 months my automatic 2000 jetta has been having trouble shifting to reverse. I usually have to put it in to drive, then reverse in order for it to work. Park to reverse usually does not work. When I pop the hood and listen while shifting I can hear a terrible sound that sounds rough and abnormal. The fluids are all checked out and fine, including transmission fluid. A local wrench said the transmission probably has to be replaced completely, though he‘s not qualified to do that. The jetta has 113,500 miles on it, how many more miles do you think it will last if I don‘t replace the transmission?

Answer:

careful often it is just needing an adjustment or something simple, i would find a mechanic and i would say not a transmission shop since that is what they do. some cities have vw mechanics that are not dealers but guys who like vws and know them well and get an opinion or two cause often it is something simple. just google vw mechanics in you area and see if you get any hits even a dealership might be good all though expensive
I have a 2001 Jetta Automatic. I had to replace my transmission a few months ago. The mexican made Getrag transmissions in these models are prone to failure(automatics only). That is why VW went to a japanese style starting 2002. I had to find a rebuilt one out of Texas, have it shipped to canada, installed to a tune of $5500. Luckily I had purchased a third party warranty. Anyhow about your car, replace the transmission. But do your homework since these problematic units are very hard to find and very expensive. There is a way to use the newer style(2002+) however the control module has to be replaced and some mounts may be different. Like I said, do your homework because in canada there was actually a recall for the transmission control module(mounted under the back seat somewhere). This may be ther perfect time to upgrade since the new style is much improved and cheaper Good luck
no it doesnt work, its just a ricer boy thing.they think its cool when they rev thier engine and it makes a hissing sound
