Question:

Washing my cars motor?

I wanna wash my cars motor and my plan is to spray degreaser on top of the motor and let it sit about 3 min. Then presure wash it. I wanna know if there is something i have to take off so it wont get wet. Are there any pros/cons if so can u name them. wat ways do u guys recommend me? Thanks

Answer:

Yes if you have a newer car do yourself a big favor and DONT DO IT.! newer modern cars have so many sensors that introducing water is going to screw every electronic giamo up badly. I suggest going to a professional car deatailer and making a deal for a quick steam clean this is much easiere and a whole lot safer you can leave the car running and its a no ham no foul kind of a deal. We used to clean cars up to about 88 in the car wash at the local quick stop but not any more. After my boss ate a 600 dollar computer he said thats it Steam clean only. and we had no trouble since.
Don't get the fuse panel or the alternator wet. A pressure washer could push water into where you don't want it. What's the matter with a garden hose? Why on top? Put the degreaser on the grease, and on the paint all around the engine compartment. I used to have my engine steam cleaned in the 70's. I don't think water is so great for engines now that there's so much electronics involved. May as well do your PC computer tower with then pressure washer while you're at it. I clean the paint around the engine with detergent, and put armor all on the black plastic parts. Cleanliness is next to godliness except under the hood.
Scrap the degreaser plan which will leave an oil slick in your drive way and the motor will stink like kerosene for a week. Take the car to a wand type car wash. Lift the hood and hot soap spray everything under the hood. Rinse with clear water when everything is clean. We have been cleaning car, truck, tractor and lawn mower engine compartments for 45 years at wand type car washes. The alternator and starter will not be damaged. Roger the top contributor doesn't know squat about cleaning engine compartments.
