Try some powdered borax. Sprinkle on a small section of the carpet first and try covering with a towel for a few minutes to stop any chance of the cat licking it (will make him very sick). Then vacuum it up properly. If this isnt something you want to try just get a bucket of warm water and some eucalyptyus oil in it...very little. Get a large sponge and soak it in the water then wring it out so its damp. Rub in one direction over the carpet - this should bring the hair together into a moist clump that can be vacuumed up easily.
Carpet Cleaning Without Chemicals
if you're worried about your kitten, try an all natural cleaner to get the dirt out. i use Simple Solutions because my puppy still has accidents on the carpet so I use that to clean it up (it removes his urine odor, cleans the carpet, and is safe if he were to sniff or lick it), there are other options at your local pet store too. as for the cat hair, try a broom or a bristle brush, it should collect all the hair into little clumps so you can just pick those up.
