Question:

What are some home remedies for keeping animals out of the garden?

I keep finding cat poo in my garden and I don't like it.

Answer:

If you have a veggie garden, chicken wire might not work and scent repellents is a no-no, so try citrus peels. Cats are averse to the smell of citrus so place the rinds a few inches apart into your veggie garden. As the smell fades, replace with more rinds. Step4 Another natural repellant is vinegar. You will not be able to use this in your garden, but it works great to use around garden perimeters. Use a store bought 5% acidic or apple cider vinegar. Make sure you reapply after it rains.
If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind. The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward.
I don't know if this has already been mentioned because I'm too impatient to read through all the answers here, but try putting some strands of fish line about 6-12 off the ground around the edge and through your garden (tied around sticks). The line will be 'invisible', and will scare the deer when it touches them. Works. Takes probably 20 minutes depending on the size of your garden.
My Mother in law swears by mothballs for keeping cats out of her flowers. Animals also hate the smell of mothballs, so you can toss a few into your garden and flowerbed as well, to keep away cats, dogs, and rodents. Did you know onions are a natural pesticide as well? Here's an easy-to-make concoction that will repel insects (and animals too) in your flowers and vegetables: Use a blender to puree 4 onions, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 tablespoons of cayenne pepper, and one quart of water. Put the mixture aside and then dilute 2 tablespoons of soap flakes in 2 gallons of water. Pour all the contents in your blender, stir it up, and this gives you an eco-friendly bug spray to use on your plants
I've heard that human hair will do it ..... I haven't tried it tho. I've also been told to place plastic (picnic) forks tine-side-up just under the soil so that when stepped on it hurts the pads in their feet. It worked for me in a vegetable garden years' ago. good luck. Oh....I also heard that taking two small pieces of dog poo and placing them at the place the cats enter the area will work good. They don't like peppermint oil either!!
