My house is heated by gas.it's expensive! What's the temp that you guys have the thermostat on, during winter?Mine is 72-74 (b/c it's really cold in Michigan).and bills are high.I've sealed the windows as best as possible etc.Any other suggestion on how to reduce heating bill? Should I shut all air-vents excepts for the rooms I'm in, so that the heat doesn't go in rooms not used?
Walk around the house with a lit cigarette ( if you smoke) or an incense stick ( if you dont smoke) and hold the smoke trail around all the windows and doorsIf the smoke blows in, that is an air leakMost times, problems are around the window framesUsing a pry lever, take off the molding from the insideIf you have a gap between the rough framing and the window frame, go to Home Depot or Loews and get STUFF, a low expansion foam fillerUse that to fill the openings between the framing about 1/2 way, it will fill up as it expandsPut the trim molding back onThere are different seal kits for the sides and bottoms of the outside doorsYou can ask again at Home Depot or Loews and they can point out what works wellIf you are getting cold through the glass of the windows themselves, the cheapest temp fix is to use the plastic wrap that tapes around the window frame from the outside, but come warm weather, look into double pane windowsIt will cost, but you can make it back within a few years with heating savingsCheck the attic insulationYou can always add more, just dont block the soffit vents when doing soI will add just one more thingI also have gas forced hot air and even after going over all the above, it just didnt helpMy heating bills were running $450 a month in the cold part of the winterTwo years ago, I bought a pellet stoveI keep the house at 74 degrees now, use one bag of pellets a day and my gas furnace doesnt cut in at allIt cost me $3000 to set up the pellet stove, but the payback time is two yearsIt runs me 2 1/2 tons of pellets a winter now at $225 a tonSomething you might want to look intoBest of luck to you and I hope you have found some of this helpful.
