He put that faith to work, flew a kite in a thunderstorm, shocked himself with a key, and used his observations to invent the lightning rod. He attached his lightning rod to some bells inside his house, creating the first electric doorbell. His invention was designed not to capture energy, but to redirect it into the ground where it couldn't harm the wooden houses it approached. But his discovery provided the basis for the modern industry and technology without which America can no longer function. We benefit from his faith verified by science, and we honor that union of faith and science by setting up lightning rods, among other things.
