Magnetically soft materials are relatively easy to magnetize but they don't retain their magnetism for very long. Magnetically hard materials retain their magnetism permanently. To make a material magnetic a property of atoms called the magnetic moment has to be aligned. When groups of atoms have the same alignment it's called a magnetic domain. In magnetically hard materials these domains tend to keep their alignment while in magnetically soft materials the domains lose it.
