Question:

What causes a transmission to go bad?

Like what do you have to do to have a bad transmission? and what are the major signs of a bad transmission?

Answer:

In the case of automatics, low transmission fluid or worn out bands/clutches. Major signs of transmission trouble are the car stops moving forward or backward, the transmissions slips when starting to accelerate or hard/abrupt shifting. Occasionally sediment will accumulate in some valve body passages and that can ultimately block a passage, causing erratic operation or even inability to move the vehicle.
Why they go bad: 1) Low/dirty fluid (or no fluid at all) 2) Excessive mileage 3) Poor craftsmanship 4) Plain ole' wear n' tear 5) Abusive driving habits 6) Excessive load (trying to tow a camper with your Camry) Symptoms of a bad transmission: 1) Abnormal noises coming from the transmission 2) Hesitation, late shifts, or even no shifting at all 3) Slip (car is in gear, but RPM doesn't immediately correspond to vehicle speed) 4) Car won't move at all (worst case scenario)
The number 1 reason transmissions fail is heat. Heat breaks down the protective properties of the fluid. Clutches wear down which causes slippage. Seals not sealing can cause similar problems. On newer transmissions I've seen solenoid packs that shifts gears go bad and customers think they need a rebuild. If you think your transmission is going bad, I would check the fluid level is full first(While engine is running). If it is full, have your vehicle scanned. If you have a electrical issue, it would probably have a trouble code in the computer.
