Question:

what causes water in the exhaust system but not in the oil?

Im getting water out my tail pipe but its not showing in the oil i dont think its a cracked head or head gasket ,,3.8 litre ford motor

Answer:

HI, Mostly because the oil is in a closed system and the exhaust is open to the elements and the moisture in the air. Like said above what you are seeing is mosture in the exhaust system. Unless it is overheating bad and the oil looks milky then its head gasket or cracked block good luck tim
It's probably condensation, very common in cold weather, it's like your breath on the glass that fogs it up, but it's the moisture in the air warmed up by the running engine, and fogging up the inside of your exhaust system - just like if your breathe on a cold window long enough the fog will grow into water drops and run down the glass, your exhaust pipe will do the same, but if you're in doubt of this, be sure to check your radiator coolant for a week or so when the engine's still cold to be sure it isn't losing it through a leaky gasket and sucking it through the engine when it's running (just enough to lose coolant without disrupting the engine enough to notice, - sneaky leaks.)
Water is a by-product of internal combustion gasoline engines. A quick *cooling system pressure test will tell you if there are any external or internal cooling system leaks. If an internal leak is found a cylinder lead-down test whll show you exactly where it is. Heating and cooling makes water condense on the exhaust system. The 3.8 V-6 Ford engine is by far the worst one they ever discontinued. It is true that Fords have more head-gasket failures than any brand of car.
