Question:

What do YOU know about the properties of quartz.....?

Esp. as in quartz crystals.

Answer:

Granite would weather faster than quartz. Quartz is a very stable mineral at the Earth's surface, and even though the rock granite is composed of a significant amount of quartz ..granite also contains micas which are a type of mineral that is not as resistant to weathering. Therefore, because granite contains other minerals besides quartz, granite would weather faster.
I would assume Granite as Quartz is very tightly bound giving it very unusual and useful properties.
interesting but problematic Quartz the MINERAL is a component of granite the ROCK so we are comparing apples with oranges so to speak. The rock granite would decompose aka weather faster than quartz. Given the choices and as quartz is about the most resistant mineral to weathering, granite would weather both mechanically and chemically faster than quartz. to yield clays, micas, and humm.... quartz particles no less. Kaolin beds of south Georgia USA are good examples of how granite weathers when exposed to hot ground waters. If you were, on the out chance, referring to the metamorphic rock quartzite-- it would probably weather slower than granite as the conversion of feldspar in the granite to to clay minerals allows for easier mechanical breakdown. I know of some 1.3 billion year old granite that is showing some age but holding its own. ( South Mountain, Allentown/ Bethlehem PA, USA)
