Are you not a resident of the United States? From some other country maybe? You can travel anywhere in the United States without a passport or any thingYou only need a passport if you go outside the United States.
I do not believe you need a passport unless traveling out of th countryHowever, it would be good to have at least two forms of identification with you(e.g driver's license and work ID) for security reasons.
