Question:

What exactly does a transmission do?

My transmission on my 93 chevy 1500, seems to be slipping, or wants to red line before changing gears, what will a newer transmission do for my truck? will it accelerate faster? etc?

Answer:

do you have hood locks? those are a ***** you have to push own unlock them and pop the little lever
if you mean the car was stored a long time? well its stuck. spray a garden hose on it all day then try to open it
Easy! A transmission transmits torque from the engine to the wheels. It sounds like yours is an automatic. It probably has worn clutches and/or bands. I hope you checked your fluid levels. Get it checked. .
depends on the gearing, u can buy or rebuild ur tranny now and u can make where u have a ok top speed but u can burn some rubber because u have some wicked acc., if u want ur truck to go faster the cheapest way is to install a chip,or change ur pipes, air filters, many things can make it faster, but a chip is instant power, install a chip and then set up the gearing
A new transmission will change gears at the correct RPM and do it quickly so your engine does not rev up and then go into gear. Your transmission may just need a good service and some parts replaced, but no transmission shop will ever tell you that. They will tell you that your need to have it rebuilt and they will charge you 2000 to unbolt it from the engine, open it up, replace about $40 in parts and then put it back in. THey will of course have some sort of warranty for 30 days and most of the time a shoddy transmission job will last that long. Best bet go find a NEW or GM Goodwrench rebuilt transmission and have the transmission shop replace yours with that one. Or Look online for a performance transmission from BM or TCI. All these options are about hte same price and if you have even the smallest technical ability you can replace your own transmission as it is just an unbolt, unplug, plug in bolt in job.
