Question:

What happens to fiberglass insulation installed in a wall cavity?

what happens to R-19 Fiberglass Insulation that's 61/2quot; thick, when installed in a 2x4 wall cavity? Does it spring back to the original thickness forcing the drywall to buckle, or does it perform normal and provide the R-19 value, or does it solidify from pressure of being compressed and turn into foam board?

Answer:

when compressed, fiberglass insulation loses some of its R valueWhy? Insulaton is based on dead air spaceswhen you compress 6 1/2 inch fiberglass to to 3 1/2 (which is the real width of a 2 x4) - you lose about 40% of the R value If you want an R-19 in a 3 1/2 space, you can go with styrofoam sheets in that space 1 inch styrofoam sheet 6.5 R value, 3 sheets 19.5 R valuePS: 3 sheets is better than one thick sheet because you pick-up dead air spaces between the sheets.
