You can use it to pull a fence post to the side as long you have a suitable anchor if you need to pull it Straight up you will need an overhead anchor.
I have used them to lift engines out of cars and pulling stuck cars out of ditches. I have lifted heavy objects using several at a time. I have used them to straighten fence posts and tension a chain link fence.
