Was there a manufacturer's recall on the item? Sam's Club should be able to tell you that. If there was then the onus was on you to find out. However, if the recall happened a while back, the party who inspected it should have been able to inform you. I doubt very much that there is any recourse. Hopefully no one got injured. Replace it with a better one.
