What is often referred to as' repeaters' in network communications?

Answer:

In general, other types of passive (passive, passive) relay components do not belong to repeaters. Network repeaters can also be understood as constructive networking devices at the physical level. With the development of computer, communication, network technology and equipment, the function of network repeater will be greatly increased, and it will be more efficient and safer.
In fact, there are many names of devices that usually act as repeaters in network hardware devices. For example, active hubs (multi port device active Hub LAN transmission signal amplification) of the "active" (active regeneration) relay center although sometimes also called multi port repeater, but more commonly called repeaters (Shu Niu).
When a network repeater is interconnected with an isomorphic network segment with the same interface and the same medium access control protocol, an instrument device is added to the network to amplify and retransmit the transmitted signal. Thus, the signal attenuation caused by the long cable line of the network segment can be avoided, and the reliability of the transmission can be effectively improved.
