My family has been through one sofa a year and we can't keep doing it. I would like to know what sofa works for other rough families out there. I know that it has very little to do with price. I have gotten $2000.00 sofas and $500.00 sofas and they have very little different when it comes to the quality of how they are made. I know the best fabric is Leather... I just need a brand that is also great for kids; who can't sit without plopping or jumping or what ever else they do when parents aren't around. Please tell me YOUR experiences with the brand of couches that you have used, please. Thank you!
The very best sofa that you buy for a rough family is a vintage 1960s or earlier model from the thrift store. I went through a couple of $1000 sofas before I figured this one out, and finally bought some solid, old Early American thing at the thrift store for about $40. It has lasted through a houseful of kids ~ and is so solidly built that when the last kids leaves, I plan on reupholstering it :) Newer sofas are not as solidly built as the old ones ~ it's not the upholstery so much as it is the frame. Newer sofa frames (especially the budget lines) are made of thin plywood, soft woods, or plastic which just doesn't hold up as well. Older sofas had solid hardwood frames, which is why they are heavier and last for many decades. Yeah, they are dated looking but what-the-heck. You can always have them reupholstered into some a little more chic looking, and it will probably last for decades .
This End Up Furniture! I worked in a children's group home for developmentally disabled for almost 7 years and those kids were allowed to be monsters. The furniture had been there several years prior to me working there. It is a vinal or cloth cover on a very sturdy wood frame. I have never seen it split, tear or be punctured. Not beautiful but not ugly.
