Question:

what is the best yarn for loom knitting?

I'm new at loom knittingI've only found acrylic yarns, can't seem to find 100% wool, alpaca, etcI'm looking for really soft yarn amp; bulky to make a hat amp; scarf for my hubbyAny recommendations for your favorite yarn would be greatThanks!

Answer:

Yeah, there's several books that mention itOne small problemMetal doesn't shrink that muchStick an empty soda can in a dry ice freezerIt won't miraculously shrink to 1/2 it's size or anythingAnd that's aluminumMortars are heavy steel tubesJust not happeningIt also mentions that 70% failed to detonateCold, does not stop things from detonatingIt just doesn't work that way.
I read a book about this a few years agoI remember them saying they had to urinate on their rifles get them to workM-14
i can say fom experience that the cold can do some amazing thingsi can also say that clearances are tighthard to grasp that it would shrink the tubethey would be more fragilethe term annealing comes to mindyou use fast heating and slow cooling to affect a physical change in the molecules that make certain alloys easier to work withI dont think they could get the tubes warm enough to anneal them ~~IMO myth busted
Some problems exist to this dayThe use of modern equipment in cold weather is a whole freaking industry by itselfYet some problems just have to dealt with a delicate touch.
For a soft bulky yarn to make a guy's hat, I would personally recommend Michaels stores' Loops Threads Country Loom yarn in granite colorIt's about halfway between black and grey, and is nicely fleckedIt's acrylic, but is very soft and warm and has a great hand feelIt's a weight group 6, which is technically called super bulkyIf you want a weight group 5, called bulky, Michaels Loops Threads Charisma yarn is goodI like Country Loom best, but Charisma is soft and warm, too.
