Question:

What is the chemical name of Chloride?

I'm looking at a sheet I have of Common Polyatomic Ions and I'm looking for Chloride, but I can only find Chlorite. Is Chlorite correct or is it a typo? (The specific molecule I'm looking for is Copper chloride)

Answer:

Chlorite is ClO2- Chloride is Cl- Cuprous chloride [copper(I) chloride] is CuC2 (may be seen as Cu2Cl2) Cupric chloride [copper(II) chloride] is CuCl2
CuCl3 or CuCl2 depending on which ion of Cu u have. Chloride is just elemental chlorine in a compound.
