A heat exchanger cools or heats by indirect contact. The radiator in a car is a heat exchanger. The engine produces a lot of heat and it uses water flowing through the engine to cool the engine. All this water is pumped to the radiator where the cooler air flowing through it cools the water and then the whole process starts over again.
