what is the point of a cold air intake and whats the difference between a cold air intake and a short ram intake?

Answer:

I'm hungry but not tired. I could really go a Soy Latte and blueberry muffin right now.

Yes, I am. I am tired of being hungry.
Cold Air Intake is lower to the ground and pulls in colder air to the engine. Cooler air results in an increase in performance and HP to the engine. A short ram replaces the OEM intake and a significant increase in intake air volume will only occur in an engine where the factory intake piping was restrictive. If your running a turbo or supercharger I would opt for short ram as the turbo or supercharger will usually negate the CAI because of excess heat. It really depends on the car and what your going for. Bad part about CAI is Hydrolock which is caused by water getting sucked into the filter from a water source (heavy rain, puddle, flood) and will pretty much kill your engine. So if you live in wet lands or where it rains all the time I'd go for a short ram.
