Question:

What is with the obsession with wood pallet-based decorations right now?

I see wood-pallet decorations all over Pinterest and I just don't get why people would want to take a crappy looking wood pallet and make it into something for their home.

Answer:

I got my hands on some that were oak, planed them down and made boxes out of them, similar to the old wooden boxes like recipe cards were kept in. I used some for trivets and cut the wood in the shape of quilt blocks, like the bear paw pattern, then used up different colors of stain to make the patern stand out. for grout I mixed the sawdust with elmers wood glue and filled in. Also used medium polyurethan for shine. Looks like wood tile.
Picket fence benches/chairs. Hard to explain but nice looking. They are simply chairs or benches with a back that looks like a white picket fence.
While I can't imagine a pallet being used for a notice board but if you must, just dry it out first. I'm sure there are a few critters hiding in the pallet. Drying it out in the sun will make them seek shelter elsewhere.
Taylor guitars (they make some of the best accoustics) once made a guitar out of pallets. (granted this would be a project rather than a craft)
