Question:

What large breed of dog sheds a lot and has a soft undercoat that could be spun?

I'm looking for a large dog, one that is strong, intelligent and that isn't extremely hard to train, I'm not afraid of challenge if neededI would prefer a breed that doesn't drool too much and that is somewhat active (daily walks)It needs to have a soft undercoat that DOES SHED A LOT since it would be to make yarn, so every 2 days grooming or once a weekI've thought of a german shepherd, but I'm not too sure if their undercoat would be good for making yarn? The undercoat must be soft, long and shed a lot.

Answer:

Hmmmm.that's a good QI'll wear aluminum underwear and seeUsually I get probed at like 2am by them and I'll see if the aluminum throws them off.
YesLine your santa hat with aluminium cooking foil for added protectionRose P.
No, however, your boys will be roasted if you step outside in an electrical storm wearing aluminum underwear.
I thought you enjoyed a bit of probing now and then.
You will most likely need to mix the undercoat with wool fibers in any case, because the structure will be too fine and short to hold together properly when you work it on the spindleSamoyed might be an option, as New Foundland dogs (read up on health issues), many of the spitz dogs shed like crazy as well, but don't expect a huge production outside of the bi-annual shedding seasonI have a breed that sheds like crazy twice a year (autumn and spring), but very little during summer and winterAnother option is to visit dog forums and ask for undercoatThere are a yarn makers in the national dog forums in my country, and they usually get plenty of material to work with just by asking and offering to pay the shippingAnd the plus side of this is of course that there will be a range of colours to work with.
