Question:

what tells the transmission when to shift?

I need to know what tells the transmission when to shift, because my car takes forever to shift between the gears. Anyone know what it is I‘m talking about?

Answer:

Transmission use various components on today's electronic shift modulators. Mass air flow, Throttle Position Indicators , RPMs ,vehicle speed sensors, ect.all work together to determine what gear is best In the old daze they were vacuum operated . Have you checked the level? (Engine warm ,running , with transmission in park) When is the last time you had a transmission fluid and filter change? Low fluid, or a clogged transmission filter will cause late shifting .
that depends on what type of trans you are talking about. on the classics there are a few different things that tell the trans when to shift, like a vacuum modulator or a governor, actually in that situation the vacuum modulator will tell the trans to wait on a shift. in some of the newer transmissions the computer will instruct it when to shift.
It may be happens when the mainshaft or the bearing for it is worn out. There is too much play in the mainshaft, and the gear is not running exactly perpendicular to the mainshaft. There is no adjustment for this, the transmission has to be repaired. You can remove it yourself and bring it to a standard transmission repair shop, or if you have some experience and the special tools required, you can do the repair yourself, but it must come out of the car to do this. IF the vehicle shifted properly BEFORE you changed the filter and installed NEW transmission fluid of the same type of which the manufacturer recommends, then you either did not install the transmission GASKET and or O ring on the filter correctly OR there could be a problem with the filter as most filters have a CHECK VALVE built into the filter to prevent the fluid from draining back down thru the filter.
