I rarely blanket my horses, but I live in good old sunny CaliforniaWhen I lived in Pennsylvania, I started blanketing my horses during the night in OctoberWhenever the temperature drops to below 55/60 I put at least a light weight onMy horses are always clipped so they can get very very cold without any protectionIn the winter (when it's a low of 10/15) they always had on one of those spandex-type body insulators (I don't know what the brand is called, but I call them long-johns), a medium weight, and a heavy weight on topYou have to be careful when a horse is clipped because they can easily become chilledA friend of mine does not blanket her horse at all, in any weather, and her horse is perfectly healthyBut he has an awfully rugged coatIt really depends on your personal preferences and your horse's needsBut I would always recommend blanketing.
