Question:

What temperatures should I use a light/medium/heavy blanket on my horse?

I have an 11 year old TB mare who grows just a little bit of a winter coatWe live in New EnglandThe barn she is kept at requested a chart for which blanket I would like on her at what temperatureI have a waterproof sheet, and medium and a heavy weight turnoutShe is on turnout 24/7 with a sturdy run-in shed. Also, I may be moving her to an indoor and doing a full body clip, but then she would be stalled at nightHow does that effect what others do for blankets?

Answer:

try gently washing by hand, after rinsing, roll up in a dry towel to take out excess water, dry flat hope this helps
I would say rain sheet above 45 and only if it is raining, these don't breathe all that well and even with a light winter coat she is better off without it as long as she stays dry45-25 I would use the mid weight and only when it is very cold use the heavyIt is better to slightly under blanket her, she can get out of the wind and rain and the last thing you want is her sweating under the blanket, which will cause a chillIf you body clip her I would only slightly modify the temperatures, maybe 5 degreesHorses with their large mass are designed to keep themselves warm.
