Question:

What type of irons would you recommend?

Looking to get a new set of irons toward the end of this years golf season and just sort of starting to look into planning for what I should look for. I currently have the Ping g10‘s. Starting to grow out of them and my swing coach recommends a bit different style as well. What I mean is he said that I should look for irons right in between blades or players irons and game improvement irons. Kind of like a half blade iron. Not fully sure what I should look for. Any recommendations? Please give more than just the brand.

Answer:

Nike Pro Combos. Great mix between cavity backs and blades. A little more like a cavity for 3-5 iron to help get those longer iron shots airborne, and more like blades for shorter clubs to give you the most shot-making ability. Solid clubs. Even Tiger, I believe, used a Pro Combo 3 iron for some time before switching to the Pro Blade to complete the set.
It all depends on your skill level if you are a beginner-intermediate i recrement that you stay within Pings G series if your are more of a advanced golfer than i suggest that you choose the I 15 Ping irons they are a great club for distance and are forgiving. These kinds of irons are also right in between blades or players irons and game improvement irons. Kind of like a half blade iron. They are not so expensive and you should be able to get better with these irons
Well G10's are game improvement irons. So are you looking for a better player's iron? I suggest you find a demo day and try out different equipment there. There happening as we speak. I'm sure there is one at your local driving range or pro shop this weekend. I agree with Dawgs. Having hit the VR Pro Combo myself, they're phenomenal. A combination set with full cavity long irons, split cavity mid irons, and blade short irons. Another set to consider is Mizuno's JPX-825 Pro. It's classified as a game improvement iron, but Mizuno list it's handicap spectrum from 4-16. There is also TaylorMade's RBladez Tour irons and Ping's first forged iron the Ping Anser. I tell you right now, that they're the most expensive set of irons I've ever seen.
