photographing modern buildings
This will depend on what camera your using. With a APS-C sized DSLR an ultra wide angle lens like a Canon 10-22mm or Nikon 12-24mm. If using a full frame camera a wide angle lens in the area of 14-24mm or a tilt shift lens. The tilt shift lens would be best. Both Canon and Nikon make them. Nikon call them PC lenses. Of course a large format camera would be best because of their ability to tilt and shift the film plane.
Fundamental considerations which influence the answer to your question: How tall is the building? What is the building's footprint shape? What is the nature of its setting? (urban, rural, hemmed in by other buildings?) How far away can you get? Can you achieve a viewpoint above ground level? Do you want the whole building, details, or both? Exterior, interior, or both? Much more information required.

Hmm, This is interesting. Well it depends if your going to take a picture of a single building or a skyline. For 1 or 2 use a normal lens. For 2 or more use a wide angle. For a single building use a telephoto lens.
I've photographed lots of buildings. I usually use a 4x5 camera with a wide angle lens to capture the angles of the building. But no matter what camera your using I think you should use a wide angle. If your on a digital SLR then use something like a 10-22. That will emphasize the angles of the building. Then you may want to use a polarizing filter for the glass issue.
