Are air conditioner is blowing 1/2 the air out the evap coolerso some air is going into the house and a lot of air is going thru the evap cooler which is on the roofwhich means I'm air conditioning the world! If not you can take the duct loose in the attic and cap it offUsually the big distribution grille in the ceiling is attached to a metal box in the atticThe duct that goes to the cooler is also attached to this boxYou can pull the duct loose and put some sheet metal over the hole in the boxGo to your local home center or hardware store and get some mastic to seal the edgesYou can buy it in a tube that fits in a standard caulking gun for a small job like thisIf you are going to use the swamp cooler in the future and don't want to destroy the duct work you can take the grille off the ceiling and get a piece of styrofoam insulation boardCut it to fit in the openingYou can even seal around the edges with expanding foam to make it air tight.
