clearly a corrosion product. question as to whether it is sulphide (CuS) or oxide (CuO), both of which can appear black. Most likely CuO. basically, the pipe has oxidized (rusted) over the years due to exposure to moisture in the shallow soil and the oxygen that is available in that moisture. it is simply tarnished copper.
