You have two basic types of hoists, in ground and above ground. Adaptors are used to lift the vehicle without the hoist doing damage to the under carriage,I.E. low mufflers or a lowered suspension. They are also used to provide support at specified jack only positions. They allow access for removal of major components, drive shaft, differential, transmission, engine. Some engines come out through the bottom and clearances are tight.
If your talking about an engine hoist they have adapters for the hook end that attach to the engine and will allow you to tilt the engine forward and back to maneuver it into or out of the car.
