I‘m looking towards buying this 95 Camaro Z28. It has a 4L60E automatic transmission. All drive gears work, but reverse is out. Is this a sensor, linkage, or would the whole transmission need a rebuild?
Leave that to be somebody else's problem- and problem it will be.
There is no internal linkage in this transmission, all electric. There is an electric module for the reverse located in the transmission pan. My suggestion is to have a mechanic look the car over before you buy it. They can normally tell if the transmission fluid is burnt, indicating a bigger problem then just a module. The only other way to tell what it is, is to drop the pan and look in it to see if there is any metal bit, fibers from the clutches and such. If the inside of the pan is dead clean, means it has been serviced and they passed on trying to repair the transmission. If the pan had metal/fiber it will be a rebuild job. If it is a little dirty but no metal/fiber it could just be the module.
Several possibilities. - A stuck valve in the valve body -Low/Reverse clutches bad/not applying -Reverse clutches bad/not applying If it is in the valve body, this can be accessed with the transmission in the car. The others will require the removal and dismantling of the transmission. My best guess would be a bad seal on the reverse clutch apply piston based on the information you have provided. (This is the clutch pack all the way in the back of the transmission.)
