Question:

wheel bearings ford focus?

i had my car serviced and it had new rear brake drums fitted, 2 days later i hear a rubbering sound comming from the offside rear wheel, took back to garage and they told me the bearings was all shoot and that the car was to dangerous to drive home, could this be true, would they off noticed this then servicing the car, what could of happened

Answer:

On the 2002-2003 Ford focus, the wheel bearings are actually sealed from the factory into the brake drum. There is a defect in these bearings that causes it to go out quickly. My father is replacing his sixth brake drum on this car today. That's six brake drums replaced in a year on one car because of this bearing problem.
Its possible. The may have contanimated the bearing/grease when installing the brakes, but It may have just been wear especially if you have high mileage on the vehicle. You didnt mention what the mileage was on the vehicle, but wheel bearings do go on the Focus. They probably would not have noticed this without pulling the wheel assembly. Ask them to save the part when they are finished. This way you will be able to inspect it for wear and how bad it really is. This should not be an expensive job. Max price on the part should be $15....and that is with alot of markup. You should also have the opposite side checked to see if that is bad also. Good Luck

if you did not have this problem before brake/drum replacement, then the most likely cause is failure of the installer to keep your bearings and hubs clean of contaminates during his work, and or did not clean and service them at the time he did the work, and or improperly tourqued the wheel bearing retaing nuts !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for reals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I was you, I would I would take a copy of this answer to them demand them to remedy the problem for free, or pay for remedy by anoither shop who will not be so negligent!!!!!!!
you my online friend have whats called pressed in hub bearings. if these were indeed gone, it would have either wobbled the wheel excessively or you would not be able to move the said car forward or backward, it would have seized. The hub alone is 100-150 dollars, the bearngs are around 100.00. The rubbing sound you may have heard could have been the maladjusted star adjusters, if drum brakes, or maladjusted brake pads, then you would smell brake dust People that work at Jiffy-Lube are not certified mechanics all they do is swap oil and vacuum carpets in cars, nor would a certified mechanic ever work there period, I did for three days and quit after witnessing gross neglegence on a women's car personally, left to work for Honda
