I'm looking to buy my first house and was wondering when copper plumbing became popular? I'm sure I can find out what plumbing a particular house has, but it would be nice to know what the oldest (in general) house I should be looking at is. Thanks!
coppers been around for ever its perfect. just stay away from (kitec) its orange flex line they started a while ago (18yrs) and its zinc lined and when coup links are brass you have dissimilar metals that will cause failure. theres a class action lawsuit going on right now because of it. yet there are still some shady plumbers out there that will look the other way.
From the Copper development association: The craftsmen who built the great pyramid for the Egyptian Pharaoh Cheops fashioned copper pipe to convey water to the royal bath. A remnant of this pipe was unearthed some years ago still in usable condition, a testimonial to copper's durability and resistance to corrosion. That was over 5000 years ago, so I think it just might be ok to say that copper has withstood the test of time. {wink} Al
oh good grief. copper is cheap and plentiful. it's been used for years and years. it's plyable and easy to solder. it's been around for ever. under the sink you probably have PVC drain lines. your sewer lines and gas lines will be black piping. your hvac lines will be copper as will some of the plumbing lines. none of this is really a big deal. my big deal is the shut off valves. i have a fetish for replacing those on a new to me house. i always replace the copper supply lines with flex hose and put in new shut off valves. that is if i replace the fixtures which i always do.
