I'm not sure about causing an explosion per se. Unless you have some combustibles near by that would be bad. Oils and grease are also bad as they tend to catch fire easily too. Throwing water onto an open flame can actually move the flame/fire causing it to spread. See the link below for some handy kitchen fire safety tips!
never throw water on a grease fire.u may push more grease out of the pan with the water making the fire bigger
