I can not replace the whole furnace due to limited budget and mostly attic access problems. So I need to find a heat exchanger that I can replace the cracked one with. York furnace model #P1HGD15N10001a (1980ish). Or can it be retrofitted with a newer heat exchanger. Is there a creativeway to do that? Thank you,Freezing near Detroit.
if you can't afford a new furnace then look at other ways of heating. like an electic heater. almost every furnace person will tell you that it can not be done. truth is it can be but it is not pratcial. furnaces have advance a long way since then and it is better to get a new one. a new one will pay for it's self in a few years in gas savings. also ask around as they sometimes have payment plans to help pay off the new furnace
It is cold here too. Maybe you should consider electric baseboard heaters. You will not find a heat exchanger for a furnace that old. You are talking about the whole major part of the furnace. There are places that help those who can not afford to buy furnaces. You might check with your local welfare office. I think it is like SIEDA or something like that. Try federal grants too. You need to hurry though, the money does run out.
You cannot replace the heat exchanger on this unit. Manufacture only make the heat exchangers for 5 to 6 years after the introduction of a model. When the stock is gone, no ones makes any more. Besides, lets say you were able to find a new one, by the time you hire someone who knows how to install it, you are already 1/2 way into the cost of a brand new one. You are only asking for trouble to try another heat exchanger
You risk a lot when trying to replace with a part on a 27 year old furnace. A heat exchanger is fairly expensive and really, you may have a cracked furnace wall at this stage of the game. I would call a professional and NOT attempt yourself. You may have a limited budget, but believe me, you don't want to risk carbon monoxide poisoning, and if you use some other model or make, you are really asking for it. Call in a professional and heed their advice.
I wouldn't even think about replacing the heat exchanger in a 27 year old furnace. Even if you could find one for that furnace, you would still have a 27 year old furnace that is going to cause you more problems down the road. Companys do offer financing for replacement of heating and air conditioning products. No you can't retofit a newer heat exchanger of a different brand or even a York brand. Sorry. Any question feel free to email me.
