Question:

where can I find aluminum beams?

I'm doing a bedroom and had installed 2x12's to suppport the roof then the inspector said it wont support the weight of the roof. Then he said I had to get an aluminum beam to go there instead. I don't know what they are or were to obtain one. Any help

Answer:

Aluminum is not the material of choice for beams. Perhaps a second set of 2x12's would satisfy him. Glu-lams could do it, or steel beams, but how would you know how to size and space them? It could be cheaper to hire a structural engineer to help, than to try to comply with the inspector's specific requirements.
It all depends on how wide the span is.If it is too wide just get some more 2x12's and lap them(if you are worried add a 10 metal edgeing strip between them) and you should be able to easily span 26 ft.Just stager the joins.Since you already have one set up that should be cheaper.I've never heard of useing a alluminum beam since it is weaker than wood..
Tell the inspector to try flying kites...........get your self a nice glue lamb..........and you'll do the job....and it will be fantastic. Nite..........enjoy
