My uncle was given a (real) polar bear rug by a little old lady, and it's vintage. We'd like to sell it, but we have no idea where to start. It's incredibly creepy to have this poor dead thing hanging out in your garage. Is it legal to sell it in the US? It does have some damage, it's missing part of a paw, and the nose is a bit sad looking. Otherwise, it's still soft and life-like.
Don't know but...since our government has listed them as threatened, I do know you better be careful and make sure you find out the real scoop on your question. I do know that a person cannot transport them into the us--even if they were taken legally. That I did research on line not long ago. Good luck Randy

Buying and selling bear skin rugs is legal in the United States; however, the rug must be made from a bear that was killed according to federal and state laws. The seller must prove the process by which the bear was legally killed. If the bear was shot in one state and the pelt is being sold in another, the process by which it arrived in the second state must be proven through documentation. The site below tells you how to do it.
