Quartz is a mineral whose chemical composition is SiO2.This chemical composition is not altered or broken down by chemical weathering or chemical action.Only mechanical weathering or force is the one that breaks the quartz paricles into tiny pieces that is winnowed and pushed on to the beach. That is why most of the beaches are made of quatz sand. There are other materials as well. The most commonly found is the Calcium carbonate from the shells of molluscs.Minerals such illmenite, Rutile ,Garnet can also be present along certain coastlines along with some clay.
Quartz is a relatively hard mineral (Mohs Hardness of 7) that lacks cleavage. As it gets moved down to the beach, other minerals will weather by chemical or mechanical methods while quartz gets broken down and becomes rounded by tumbling in the water. The other answers took care of other minerals that can become beaches, although I have heard that the black sands of Hawaii are from magnetite grains within basalt.
