A resistor does not store energy. both an inductor and a transformer ( which is made of multiple inductors ) store energy in the magnetic field. Consider a transformer where no current is drawn from the output. Current is applied to the input. Where does the energy go? Into the magnetic field. And this energy is returned a quarter cycle later so the transformer does not waste the energy supplied.
